Oyster HR, a global employment platform, makes it possible for companies to hire people no matter where either is located in the world. They have a diverse and international team, based globally with more than 150 Avvoka users.
Due to the nature of their work, their automation consists of complex international employment agreements across different jurisdictions. With Avvoka, they have been able to produce 250+ documents per month and drastically reduce time spent drafting contracts.
With over 45 live templates the automation and implementation has been primarily completed by Maryann Walters (Director of Business Transformation) and by the Automation and Product Support team (Erica Mair, Nonku Sibanyoni and Scott Charlton).
Other key contributors include Irene Tremblay (Product Manager) and Tanya Pfumojena (Legal Ops Specialist).
The challenge
- Oyster HR needed to find a tool that would decrease employment documents’ drafting time due to the extremely large volume of documents being created. The tool needed to be intuitive and be able to handle complex automation logic.
- To create a smooth user experience for clients on the Oyster HR platform – An easier way to collate the necessary data from them to draft a contract.
- For their team to have full control over their contracts, from draft, negotiation, rather than involving several departments which can lead to delays in completion.
- Oyster HR operates in multiple jurisdictions and there are different requirements relating to the validity of e-signatures. Oyster needed a tool that could adapt to the different scenarios.

The Avvoka solution
1. Avvoka offers a no-code and intuitive platform that can handle complex automation. Features like looped elements, attribute library, approval workflows, datasheets have been a game changer for Oyster HR’s automation needs.
2. A dynamic questionnaire with multiple variants and possible outputs was hosted on Oyster HR’s platform to capture client data through a user-friendly experience. It auto-populated the answers via the Avvoka API to create document drafts.
3. After approvals are granted, some documents are signed with Avvoka’s native signature solution. Others use the DocuSign integration when the team needs to use advanced or qualified electronic signatures depending on the jurisdiction requirements.
4. Avvoka is launching a new feature, “Avvoka Drive”, which will expand the platform’s document management capabilities, allowing users to store third party paper with all its metadata, making it possible for Oyster HR to store all their contracts in one place.
The results
3,500+ employment documents have been signed using Avvoka and its DocuSign integration.
Workflows were set up so that documents triggered automated approvals ensuring that documents were only able to be sent or signed when absolutely ready. This ensured each document was reviewed by the correct corresponding team before it was sent, signed or downloaded.
They are now able to automatically translate dual language contracts, with Avvoka’s Datasheets feature which has been integral for the multiple jurisdictions they work with.
Oyster HR’s adoption of Avvoka has allowed for a significant reduction in the days it takes to generate a completed contract.
